Hempcrete Workshops
Join the forefront of eco-friendly building with our Hempcrete Workshops held in Ashland, Oregon! Last year, we welcomed a diverse group of 20-30 participants from around the globe, including experienced general contractors and leading academic figures in sustainable architecture. Together, we constructed a unique 3,800 square foot hempcrete house, designed around a stunning central reciprocal rafter timber frame. This immersive 5-7 day workshop not only provided hands-on experience with hempcrete installation in both interior and exterior wall systems but also fostered connections among individuals passionate about innovative building practices.
Participants gained an in-depth understanding of various hemp-lime building systems, enriched by engaging lectures that covered the history of hemp and lime, the benefits and challenges of hemp-lime construction, and comparisons to other natural wall systems. Our curriculum included practical sessions on site preparation, equipment safety, and the construction process. Attendees left equipped with the knowledge and skills to incorporate hempcrete into future projects, along with valuable contacts for suppliers, designers, and builders interested in the growing field of hemp-lime construction.
Celebrate the shift towards sustainable building practices with our Hempcrete Workshops, where education meets community. Experience how renewable materials can transform traditional building methods, while connecting with like-minded professionals and enthusiasts. Join us in shaping a greener future—together, we are laying the groundwork for a more sustainable tomorrow. Don’t miss out on the next opportunity to expand your skills and knowledge in eco-construction!
Plastering Workshops
Last summer, we hosted two highly successful Earth & Lime Finishes Plastering Workshops, which took place from June 19-23 and June 26-30. These immersive 5-day sessions provided an incredible opportunity for professional plasterers to refine their skills in a collaborative and hands-on environment.
Participants engaged in a variety of plastering techniques, including Gold Hill Clay Plaster earth finishes and traditional Japanese lime finishes like Shikui and Otsu. They worked on intricate projects, such as timberframe infills and complex masonry heaters, while learning from our expert instructors Kyle Holzhueter, James Henderson, and Lydia Doleman.
With a focus on achieving high-quality finishes, attendees benefited from personalized guidance while connecting with fellow plasterers. The workshops welcomed a maximum of 14 participants each week, ensuring ample time for hands-on practice and skill development.
Throughout the sessions, participants enjoyed freshly prepared organic lunches, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. On-site shared accommodations were also available, creating a comfortable environment for attendees to bond and share experiences.
The workshops not only enhanced participants' plastering techniques but also provided valuable networking opportunities within the industry. As we look ahead, we are excited to announce that more plaster workshops will be offered in the future, continuing the tradition of excellence and skill development. Stay tuned for upcoming dates and details, and be part of this enriching experience!
We’re bringing back the ancient skills and craftsmanship of natural building, passed down through generations. These techniques not only provide eco-friendly solutions to the building crisis, but they also offer a deeper connection to the land and to our shared history. This is about more than just building spaces; it’s about reclaiming knowledge and skills that will sustain us for generations to come.
Apprenticeships
ARC11 also has a rare few spots for 3-6 month long apprenticeships, with our experienced builders, where we offer on site living and depending on the project and level of experience, a possible daily work stipend.
